Thank you for visiting the Nowon Environment Foundation.
Greetings!
I am Jongin Dong, Chairman of the Nowon Environment Foundation, and I sincerely thank you for your visit.
Founded in 2017, the Nowon Environment Foundation was the first of its kind established by a basic local government, striving to address climate change and preserve the ecosystem at a local level.
The cornerstone for the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity was laid at the 1992 Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Under the slogan “Think globally, act locally,” Agenda 21 was born, followed by the United Nations’ announcement of the “Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development (ESSD)” goals. However, with the development of civilization, the increasing use of fossil fuels, and rising greenhouse gas emissions, humanity now faces severe challenges. Global warming and extreme climate changes—such as heatwaves, heavy rainfall, wildfires, hurricanes, and marine ecosystem disruptions—pose serious threats to human survival and the ecosystem.
Now we must put our hollow promises aside and take concrete action to save the earth and protect the land in which we live. Thus, the Nowon Environment Foundation strives to operate as an environmental hub, supporting local citizens’ actions against climate change and environmental conservation, while implementing the local government’s environmental policies at the ground level.
Nowon Eco Center’s climate change responses and environmental education, Jungrangcheon Eco Center’s river ecosystem conservation and monitoring efforts, Nowon Energy Zero Building and Nowon EZ Center’s energy self-reliant building initiatives, and Nowon Cosmos Science Center’s research and science education, all work together with the Nowon Environment Foundation to lead practical local movements against the climate crisis and ecological threats. We ask for your participation and counsel in this endeavor.
Now is the time for courage and small but meaningful actions to ensure we pass on a well-preserved planet to the next generation. The Nowon area is a very habitable place, with beautiful mountains and abundant water resources. We hope for your participation in making this area more eco-friendly and resilient in the face of climate change.
